How to Clean & Care for Gold-Tone Stainless Steel Jewelry
Updated October 29, 2026 · 5 min read
Stainless steel jewelry care starts with the surface you wear. Most Fortuna Loop pieces have a 316L stainless steel base and a gold-tone finish; check the individual product details for your piece. To clean our fashion jewelry, gently wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, keep it dry, and store it separately. The base metal does not make every finish or decorative detail waterproof.
The short version
- Put your jewelry on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
- Take it off before washing hands, showering, swimming or working out.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
- Store each piece separately in a dry pouch or jewelry box.
Can you shower with stainless steel jewelry?
For Fortuna Loop gold-tone fashion jewelry, we recommend taking it off before showering or swimming. The same advice applies to stainless steel necklaces and chains: treat the finish and any decorative details with care, even when the base is stainless steel. If a piece gets splashed, gently wipe it dry. We do not describe these pieces as waterproof or recommend soaking them.
Why does perfume matter?
Perfume, lotion, hand sanitizer and hairspray contain alcohol and other chemicals that can dull a gold-tone finish. Let them dry completely before you put your jewelry on.
How do you clean gold-tone stainless steel jewelry?
Start with a clean, soft, dry cloth and gently wipe the surface after wearing. Avoid alcohol, abrasive polishing products, jewelry dips and harsh cleaners. Do not scrub decorative accents or faux pearls, and do not soak a piece. If a mark does not lift with gentle wiping, ask us about that specific item before trying a stronger cleaner. This is a care guide for fashion jewelry; it does not provide sterilization instructions for body-piercing jewelry.
How should I store it?
Keep each piece separate so harder stones can't scratch softer finishes and chains can't tangle. A small pouch or a jewelry box with compartments works well. Keep the box somewhere dry — not in the bathroom.
How long does a gold-tone stainless steel necklace last?
There is no fixed lifespan we can promise for every necklace or finish. Wear frequency, friction, storage and exposure to products all matter. Keep the finish dry and away from perfume, lotion and harsh cleaners. Rings and bracelets touch more surfaces than necklaces and earrings, so they usually need the most care.
Quick care by type
| Piece | Tip |
|---|---|
| Rings | Take off before washing hands or using hand sanitizer. |
| Necklaces | Fasten the clasp before storing to prevent tangles. |
| Earrings | Store pairs together, separate from other jewelry. |
| Bracelets & bangles | Remove before the gym or carrying heavy bags to avoid scratches. |

Does stainless steel jewelry tarnish or change color?
A stainless steel base and a gold-tone surface are different parts of a piece. We do not promise that a decorative finish will never fade, dull or change appearance. If you notice a pink tone, discoloration or an unexpected mark, do not use a stronger cleaner to guess at the cause. Stop cleaning and send us the product name and a clear photo so we can help with the specific item.
